PT Pelabuhan Indonesia IV (Persero) provided stimulus or relaxation to port customers, especially for transshipment activities during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Operations and Commercial Director Pelindo IV M. Adji said the company had actually provided stimulus for the transshipment activity since May 2020.
"In the first period, the stimulus was given from 1-3 days to 1 - 5 days. Then 1 - 5 days becomes 1 - 7 days and the transshipment container stacking period of 1 - 7 days becomes 1 - 14 days," Adji explained on Friday (15/1/2021).
He said, Pelindo IV has so far continued to provide port services even though the government has restricted community activities to control the spread of Covid-19.
Until now port service activities including ship services, loading and unloading of goods and containers as well as passengers in all areas under the management of Pelindo IV are still running as usual.
"Especially for passenger services, they still follow the provisions issued by the government and the provision of facilities and services follows the established health protocol. The work from home (WFH) arrangement is only applied to back office employees,” Adji said.
In fact, he continued, lockdown policies in several countries due to the new variant of the Corona virus also did not really have a big impact on the port sector. Export and import activities at the Port of Makassar, especially Makassar Container Terminal (TPM) and Kaltim Kariangau Terminal (KKT) in Balikpapan and the port of destination are still running normally.
"The loading and unloading activities of international containers continue to run normally, as reflected in the direct call for exports in the Pelindo IV area which are still running as usual. Even when compared to 2019, ship calls increased by 173.91%," he said.
In 2019, Pelindo IV's direct export calls reached 46 ship calls and increase to 80 call ships by 2020. International container throughput (TEUs) also grew 142.23%, from 21,566 TEUs in 2019 to 30,674 TEUs last year, Adji revealed.
The increase in export-import activities was also due to the addition of a new Main Line Operator (MLO), namely the Maersk Line Group at TPM and KKT, and Alfa Trans at KKT.
The five biggest commodities that are transported are seaweed, plywood, cashew skin, nickel seeds and cloves.
Adji also said that the Covid-19 pandemic that occurred starting in the second quarter of 2020 did not have a significant impact on ship traffic at Pelindo IV.
"The great thing about ship service is that it has increased by 8.6% from 407 million gross tonnage (GT) in 2019 to 442 million GT in 2020," he said.
Even so, he there was a slight decrease in year on year (YoY), especially in the flow of containers. In 2020, it was recorded 2.11 million TEUs, a decrease of 4.5% compared to the previous year of 2.22 million TEUs.
Likewise with the flow of goods. There was a slight decrease of 2.1%, from 53.3 million tonnes in 2019 to 52.2 million tonnes in 2020.
The most significant decrease occurred in passenger services, 56% from 6.5 million people in 2019 to only 2.8 million people last year.
